Today, we honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities across British Columbia and Canada.
We recognize the deep and lasting impacts of the residential school system, including the intergenerational trauma that continues to affect many Indigenous individuals, families, and communities. We also recognize the strength, resilience, wisdom, and leadership of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, and the vital role that culture, community, and connection play in healing.
At BCARA, we believe recovery is rooted in hope, belonging, respect, and relationships. We know that healing looks different for everyone, and that culturally safe, Indigenous-led approaches to wellness and recovery are essential.
Today, we encourage our members, partners, and the broader recovery community to take action. Make time to learn about the history and legacy of residential schools. Listen to Indigenous voices. Reflect on how your organization can create safer, more welcoming spaces. Build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and support Indigenous-led healing, wellness, and recovery initiatives.
Reconciliation is not a destination or a single day of recognition. It is an ongoing commitment to learning, listening, relationship-building, and action.
Today, and every day, let us work together to build a recovery system where Indigenous Peoples feel welcomed, respected, and supported, and where healing, culture, connection, and self-determination are honoured as essential to wellness and recovery.
