Community of Practice

A Community of Practice (CoP) is a group of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis. It is important to establish a community of practice based on expert input and to implement those practices consistently in order to provide structured feedback and usable data.

Developing a Sector-level Community of Practice

A community of Practice is continuously refined and is only as good as the individuals or organizations contributing to it. Creating a forum of addictions and recovery experts working in a variety of treatment models/facilities is conducive to the best all-around policy creation. Development of the sector-level CoP is ongoing and requires consistent buy-in of recovery-based organizations to succeed (and to evolve).

The Importance of Sector Buy In

Creating a sector-level CoP in policy is a great start, however without consistency of practice throughout organizations, a CoP will not evolve. Consistency of practice is necessary for structured feedback and growth, particularly across organizations through the continuum of recovery, and with different treatment models, clients and recovery objectives.

Joining a Community of Practice

As an individual or organization, the best way to help shape a sector-level community of practice in addictions and recovery is to join BCARA membership and take part in the work that shapes our policies, definitions and implementation ideas. Our membership works collaboratively, and respectfully with a common goal to improve and standardize levels of care and treatment across BC. Even if your organization is not a member, you can still utilize BCARA as a resource for consultation, using our data and models to change systems in your organization.
